Overview

Shivapuri National Park with an area of 144 sq.km is situated towards the north of the Kathmandu valley which also the major watershed is providing the drinking water to the capital city. Shivapuri is the second highest hills surrounding the Kathmandu valley and lies in the transition zone between Subtropical and temperate climatic zones. This National park is known for its diverse range of vegetation which includes Pine, Oak, Rhododendron and 129 species of wild mushrooms. The wildlife present in the national park is Himalayan black bear, Leopard, Jungle cat and Rhesus monkey. The park is also the home to over 177 species of birds including 9 threatened species and over 100 species of butterflies which includes rare and endangered both. Shivapuri National Park was given the status of national park since 2002. Shivapuri National Park is a fog free zone. During winter when Kathmandu and other town are wrapped in cold thick fog, the park gets sparking sunlight. This national park receives regular westerly wind blowing from Trishuli River. Shivapuri is the heaven for flora and fauna and is one of the two national parks situated in capital city.
